What is World Wide Web

The World Wide Web which we also know as WWW and Web only. It is an information space present on the Internet. Where the document and other web resources are identified by a hypertext link interlinked and accessed via the Internet by an Accessible URL (Uniform resources locator).

WWW is also called a network of online content, it is fully Html formatted and accessed via HTTP.

In simple words, “World Wide Web” is a way of exchanging information between computers on the Internet. Which binds them together always in a vast collection of Interactive multimedia resources. History of the Web

World Wide Web was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. He was a British computer scientist, born in London. When Lee became a Software Engineer after completing his graduation, he found that the scientist has a lot of difficulty in sharing any information.

In March 1989, Lee gave his opinion on how the Web would be created through a document called “Information managment: A proposal”. Which was not immediately accepted by his boss Mike Sendall. But he was deeply impressed by these exciting words. After which Lee was given time to work on it in 1990. To work on this project he started using the NeXT Computer created by Steve jobs.

By October 1990 Berners Lee had written three fundamental technologies (Html, Url, HTTP). Which is the foundation of today’s World Wide Web.

Web Server and Web Browser

Tim Burners-Lee wrote the world’s first Web browser (World Wide Web app) and the first Web server (Httpd). With this, the first web page was served on the internet in the late 1990s. A few years later Tim left SERN where he had been working for the past several years and moved to the Massachusetts institute of technology.

Here he created the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which is today an international community and is dedicated to developing the open web standard. Even today Tim is the director of the same W3C.

Internet Vs World Wide Web

Internet is a wide network of computers. It was started in 1970 by Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf. Whereas WWW is much newer than this. The web was launched in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. It is a model for sharing information.

The web uses a method of accessing the content through the internet. It is a collection of web pages following the http protocol, which can be accessed through the internet in any part of the world. Protocol is a language used to transfer and communicate data over the Internet.

How the World Wide Web works

The web uses many different technologies for the user to locate and share any information through the internet. These include Web browser, Html (Hypertext markup language) and HTTP (Hypertext transfer protocol).

Web browser

To access any web page, you first have to use a web browser. A browser is a program that displays text, image, animation and video on the internet. Web browsers provide an interface to the user to enable your mouse to click on hyperlinked resources. Initially, web browsers were used only for web surfing.

Today’s modern web browsers allow you to do many things. Commonly used web browsers are Google Chrome, opera mini, Firefox, Mozilla etc.

URL

Now to access a web page, the second task is to type the URL (Uniform resources locator) in the browser’s search bar. Like- https://www.nayaseekhon.com as soon as you enter the url. So it converts this address to the IP address of the server and requests to fetch the appropriate page.

Now computer runs a software program which we call web server. For these web servers, a map is created to fetch a specific file from the file system. This server, after finding that file, sends it back to the computer and the computer opens that web page in the browser.

HTTP

HTTP means Hypertext transfer protocol. It communicates between client computer and web server by sending http request and receiving http response. For example, you search for a URL in the browser from which an http request goes to the web server. The server receives that request and runs an application to process it. The web server then sends the output back to the browser as that http response. So this is how http works as a communicator.

HTML

Html, which is called Hypertext markup language, is used to create the structure of the web page. That is why you must have seen the url of a web page with .html at the end. Basically, this lets the computer know that the request has come from an Html file. Initially, when only a few markup language was created, then html was used to create every web page. But now you will also see other file names like .php or .asp.
