Professionals have to work more than the laborers, women have little relief

A report released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) has revealed many important information related to employment and workers in the country. Under the NSSO, the paramedic Labor Force Survey shows an unusual picture of employment in India.

The report says that the unemployment rate in India is the highest in the last 45 years. Unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in the year 2017-18. According to the news published on the Down to Earth website, the report has collected figures of three categories of workers. These three categories are self-employed, regular salary / salary and casual workers.

It is reported in the report that in India, a rural laborer wages 48 hours a week. Whereas, this hour of work in cities increases to 56. It is clear from the fact that compared to rural laborers, more work has been done in the cities. People working in the cities are forced to work more than the people who work in the villages.

It has been claimed in the report that in the self employment category, men work 50-51 hours in a week while women in rural areas have to work for 37-40 hours. According to the report, men are 58-59 hours while women also have to work 41-42 hours.

People working in cities work 57-58 hours a week. Women in the cities work 50 hours a week in a week. However, both men and women have to work extra for two to three hours in cities.

Even casual workers have less job opportunities, but they have to spend more time in their work. In rural areas, casual workers work 44-46 hours in a week, while women work 37 to 39 hours. The working hours of women in cities are 39-42 per week.

40 hours Standard Time: Most of the member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED) believe that working hours in a week are 40 hours. The report of PLFS underscores that despite all the workers working in India, there is no safe employment available. Not only that, 49.6 percent of the salaried employees in non-farm sector do not get the benefit of social security. The percentage of women deprived of social security is more than men (51.8 percent).
