4.Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama

100 years!  Yes, 100 years is a landmark in the life of any individual, institution or business outfit.  To cross this landmark of one hundred years by a religious institution run by monastics and lay people is, no doubt, a miracle as most of us may either leave out of the world or of our ideals as the years march on.  Yes! It needs extraordinary dedication, devotion and useful Nishkama Karma of swamis as well as those volunteers who stood by them in service the Lord.  When this Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama celebrated its centenary in 2019, it felt that it was a landmark in its history and essentially felt like expressing its gratitude to the Divine Will and satisfaction that the Ashrama has fulfilled the purpose for which it was founded.

Well! Who founded this Salem Ashrama?  It was the Divine Mother’s plan that one Swami by name Tulasi Maharaj met the few young men like Namagiri Iyer, Dr. Narayana Iyer and Prof Yegnanarayanan while on his way from Bangalore to Kerala where he was the President of Ramakrishna Ashrama at Basavanagudi.  Divine Mother had deputed this Swami Nirmalananda Maharaj to carefully hold in his holy palms, the zeal and glow of the young men thus inspiring them to commence their seva to Sri Ramakrishna.  One of them Dr Narayana Iyer had seen Swami Vivekananda at Madras, on his triumphant return from West, while Sri Namagiri Iyer had the burning desire to serve the Lord in umpteen ways.  They were motivated by Sri Rajaji, the then Chairman of Salem District Board.

7.Don Bosco Anbu illam

Fr. Francis Schlooz was born on 23rd May 1912 in Venlo, Holland.  He was the eldest of 4 children of Mr. Henry and Mrs. Hubertina.  The ravages of First World War had taken its toll on the Henry family.  In spite of the poor living conditions, Francis Schlooz managed to study well and opted to join a religious congregation.  He came to India in 1935 as a missionary.   For the next 63 years he had dedicated his life for the people of this country.  His first profession was on 12th September 1935 and final profession was on 10th October 1941.  After finishing his theological studies at Yercaud, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Mathias in January 1944.

In May 1944, he became the first director of the Youth Centre at The Refuge, Broadway and worked there up to 1950.  He was then the Parish Priest of Royapuram upto 1955 after which went to work in mission centres like  Chinglepet, Chetpet and Wandiwash.  It was while working at Perambur in 1967 that Fr. Mantovani had died.  Fr. Schlooz asked to become the director of Don Bosco Beatitudes.  He worked assiduously for the welfare of the inmates for 13 long years.  It was here that his love and predilection for the leprosy patients was evident in the way he cared for them.  He not only fed about 3000 people every day, but also catered to the financial needs of the province.

From 1980 to 1987 he worked in the small and rural parish of Polur In his maiden response he vowed not to allow anyone to go to bed dying of hunger.  He alleviated the misery of daily wagers by giving them just wages when he called them to work in the land at Karaipoondi.  Widening his vision over the people of the district, when he approached the district officials to demand fixing of uniform and just wages he earned the wrath of local landlords because they paid below the living wage.  Discarded by the Government and disowned by the public, when the lepers were disoriented, Fr. Schlooz mediated with the Government to facilitate the amenities sanctioned for them.  Intending to boost their self-worth he spared no time and energy to market their handiworks.  He made no hesitation to draw the attention of the public for self-supporting enterprises of the marginalized and their right to determine just wages.

The marginalized of Martin nagar, Polur owe their enviable habitation to this Salesian enigma.   Elevating and upgrading the then existent structure to High school he built Hostels too to cater to the rural marginalized sectors.  Focusing on the faith of the rural people he built substation chapels where the people could be gathered for animation.  It was he who kick started the Rural Development programme (RDP) in Polur which has grown up to be Village Integral Animation (VIA) poised for a ‘rural revolution.’  That’s the Gospel ethos that Fr. Schlooz pledged and practiced.

10.Chinmaya Mission Brahmma Krishna Mandir

Chinmaya Mission® was established in India in 1953 by devotees of the world-renowned Vedanta teacher, His Holiness Swami Chinmayananda.  Guided by his vision, devotees all around the world formed the nucleus of a spiritual renaissance movement that now encompasses a wide range of spiritual, educational, and charitable activities, ennobling the lives of thousands in India and across its borders. Presently, headed by His Holiness Swami Swaroopananda, the Mission is administered by Central Chinmaya Mission Trust (CCMT) in Mumbai, India. Under his guidance, the Mission has continued mushrooming across the globe and stands today with over 300 centres worldwide.

Chinmaya Mission follows the Vedic teacher-student tradition (guru-shishya parampara) and makes available the ageless wisdom of Advaita Vedanta, the knowledge of universal oneness, providing the tools to realize the wisdom in one’s life.

Vedanta, the essential core of Hinduism, is the universal science of life, relevant to all people of all backgrounds and faiths. Vedanta inspires seekers to understand their own faith better. Thus, although Chinmaya Mission is a Hindu organisation, it does not seek to convert other religious practitioners.

As a spiritual movement that aims for inner growth at individual and collective levels, the mission offers a wide array of Vedanta study forums for all ages, promotes Indian classical art forms and operates numerous social service projects. To date, millions worldwide have benefited directly or indirectly from Chinmaya Mission’s numerous centres, ashrams, classes, events, services and projects.
