It started with an apple pie almost 20 years ago. My Italian Nonna had always made all the holiday pies. And ever since she died in 1996, we just simply stopped having pies at holidays, much to my dismay. So when I moved to the Washington, DC, area in 1999, I decided I was going to make an apple pie – my favorite – for my first Thanksgiving Dinner here. So my younger sister and I cracked open a bottle of wine on Thanksgiving Eve and baked an apple pie together, while drinking heavily.
