- Assam Centre for Rural Development
ACRD came into existence out of the feeling for a need of an organisation that would work for the justice and empowerment of downtrodden tribal people in Assam. The ground realities of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and a sense of alienation and frustration among the younger generation forcing them to resort to militant activities etc. brought together a group of like- minded people, who thought that voluntary organisations have a vital role to play in bringing about socio-economic development of the neglected rural people. They wanted to instil confidence in them by improving their living conditions.

Of anguish there is none greater in any other illness than that of mental disorders, although fortunately, it is mostly free from the excruciating pain that is associated with other illnesses. And this anguish does not come as much from the illness as that from the sense of humiliation, of being ridiculed, neglected and rejected. Ironically, anguish is suffered mostly by the family members when the patient is in an acute stage and has no control over her/his speech, actions or behaviour. This was experienced by a couple Mukul and Anjana Goswami who had undergone the struggles of ensuring care and treatment for a schizophrenic family member.

Snehalaya became operational on January 1, 2001. It was a millennium gift for the homeless and destitute children. On that day, Fr. Lukose Cheruvalel, the founder of Snehalaya, started staying at Dhirenpara in a small hut. On the following day, a group of 8 children picked up from Guwahati Railway Station by the Missionaries of Charity who joined Snehalaya. Next, a shed was put with a tin roof and bamboo mat walls to begin a literacy centre for the poor children of the neighborhood. It was opened on February 14, 2001.
