How much time does it take to learn English?

Please don’t fall for the “master English just in 15 days” scams. If you are a beginner, it will take one year on an average to learn the basics of the language. The best way to learn English in a year will be to dedicate at least an hour everyday towards learning.

Know your vocabulary!

The trick to learning any language is learning about its vocabulary i.e. to know the words in the language and know what they mean. The Oxford dictionary says that English has about 2,50,000 words. However, you don’t have to learn the entire dictionary but know about the 2,000-3,000 words which as used in day-to-day spoken English. So target those videos which explain the vocabulary in a very lucid manner.

For example, do you know words which describe various seasons on the planet? Or do you know the words which describe the members of your family well? What will you do if you land in USA one day? How will you find your way around? To navigate around any new place, you need to know the vocabulary which describes directions or things which you can ask strangers for help.

You can slowly conquer the language day by day. Just keep a target to learn just 10 new words every day! Start naming things that you see around your house to begin with. Once you know words for basic things, you will start feeling more comfortable with the language.

Know your grammar!

The second most important part of any language, is it’s grammar. If vocabulary is a group of describing words in the language, then grammar is a group of words which connect these describing words.

Good grammar forms the backbone of every language. Each language has its own set of rules on how to speak it. Grammar is that set of rules and exceptions that helps you put together a sentence.

For example, if you want a glass of water, you’ll say, “Can I please have a glass of water?”. In this sentence, a glass of water is the object that you want. Grammar helps you express and request for the object in the appropriate manner.

Knowing good grammar is very important as it says that you care for the rules of the language. Bad grammar can be a turn-off for many people, especially at job interviews or in group discussions. So make sure that you pay special attention to it.

Know your pronunciation!

The third important step in your English learning journey will be mastering the pronunciations. Knowing a word is not enough and knowing how to pronounce it completes the process. The best way to learn how to pronounce a word is to hear someone pronounce it. In the present day, pronunciations are easily available on the internet and just one simple search can give you a sound clip on how to pronounce a word.

Another best way to master pronunciations, is to speak the language with someone who knows the language well. Take help from a friend or a family member or a colleague, who knows English well. Talk to them everyday in English. Make it a rule that you will interact with them only in English. It might be difficult initially and you might feel shy while doing it. However, once you start, you slowly become comfortable when you overcome the initial shyness and then conversing in English becomes a habit.

But what if you don’t have company to practice your pronunciations with? In such a case, learn through imitation i.e. copy the way someone is pronouncing a sentence. Watch an English movie for example, and pause the movie after every sentence and pronounce the line. With perseverance and commitment, you’ll be able to master your pronunciations well.

Practice, practise and practise!

The key to becoming an expert at anything in the world is to practice. So make it a habit to practice what you learn every day. Practice for just 20 minutes each day and see how you progress in no time!

Set a goal!

Any project when guided by goals, makes the project time bound and achievable. So set a healthy deadline as to when you should be able to learn basic English. Every person’s pace of learning differs, so set a goal according to your ability. Don’t rush yourself or pressure your self. Good learning comes with patience. Most importantly, your goal should be to practice everyday.

Study buddy or study group

If you find learning alone boring, find a person like you who wants to learn English or form a study group with people at a similar level like you. Sharing is caring and you can help each other learn better and achieve your goals together!

But what if I’m not a beginner?

A lot of people reach the intermediate level and stop. The reason for this is that it’s hard to figure out what you are missing on and to get the right push to go from intermediate to advanced level.

If you are at an intermediate level, congratulations, you are half-way to becoming proficient with the language. Give yourself a pat on the back on your decision to improve!

How do I know if I’m at an intermediate level?

  • You know most of the grammar rules but struggle with certain finer rules
  • You have a fairly good vocabulary but you now feel ‘stuck’
  • You can read and understand
  • You fumble and doubt yourself if you are speaking the language correctly
  • You struggle to recall words which describe the finer aspects
  • You are conscious that you make some mistakes again and again but don’t know how to correct them.

How to improve your English fluency?

While you know the basics well, what will take you from a basic to an advanced level, is to work deeper on your spelling, grammar, pronunciation and listening. The goal is to be as good as the native English speakers. You don’t necessarily have to speak in a particular accent but have to know the language in and out.

How to learn Advanced English at home?

To break free from the intermediate level you don’t have to spend big bucks on enrolling yourself in expensive courses. All you need to do is focus on the key areas- reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Reading and listening form your receptive skills, meaning, skills which help you understand something. They are also called passive skills as they help you subconsciously understand your environment better.

Writing and speak form your productive skills, meaning, skills which help you act of something. They are also called active skills as they help you take action and change your environment to gain something.

How to Improve Your Receptive Skills

Receptive skills include reading and listening. Improving both skills is a sure shot way to mastering the language.

Reading Skills

One of the most important reasons why our reading skills hit a plateau is because we continue to read the same style of material over and over. The same newspaper, the same kind of books, the same web series etc.

To improve, get out of your comfort zone and start reading material which challenges you to hit the dictionary every now and then. Look for books online, which are popularly known for their level of difficulty, among English readers online.

Try speed reading! One of the best ways to fluency is to increase the number of words that you can read per minute. Time yourself to assess your current speed and keep setting goals to increase the number of words you can read per minute.

Listening Skills

The best way to improve this is to listen to native speakers- English, American, European, Australian etc. You might be habituated with listening to say the American accent, but might not be that acquainted with the Australian accent.

The best way to improve your listening skills is to listen to speeches, news channels, podcasts, etc. If you don’t understand something which is being spoken, rewind and listen to it again. Find out the meaning if you don’t understand it.

How to Improve Productive Skills?

Improving on your productive skills i.e. speaking and writing, will have a direct impact on how you communicate with people.

Writing Skills

Written communication is both of the formal and informal type. To improve on these, the best way, is to practice writing! For knowing the different styles of writing, do a thorough research on it and practice these styles everyday. To practice, you can start writing a blog and write on interesting topics which will pull a diverse audience and get you feedback on your writing from them.

Follow sources which teach you advanced grammar skills and help you learn advanced vocabulary. Do use these tips in your writing and see your writing improve over time!

Speaking Skills

Learn how the advanced native speakers speak. Use good vocabulary, idioms and phrases, expressions and examples in your language while you are speaking. Choose a topic and speak on it impromptu for say 5 minutes, in front of the mirror or record yourself on your phone’s video camera. Analyse where you fumbled and take notes. Keep improving on your weak areas.

How much time does it take to learn advanced English?

Honestly, there is no limit to this process, as every day, new concepts and new vocabulary keeps getting added to the language and it keeps evolving.
