Our start was simple. Patti Furey Crane, Mariposa’s founder, craved high-quality sweets while pregnant with her first child. Finding few options at the time, she set to baking them herself. And so, in 2004, Mariposa was hatched. Mariposa’s mission – create wholesome, hand-crafted food using the finest natural ingredients. Mariposa’s first few years were spent in a shared kitchen in West Berkeley, California.

2. Kara’s Cupcakes Marina

Kara’s Cupcakes is the vision of executive pastry chef, Kara Haspel Lind. Kara always had a love for sweets, but being the daughter of a dentist, it was discouraged by her parents. Despite that, she continued to be a passionate home baker until she realized the importance of following her dreams. She left her job as an advertising sales executive and enrolled in Tante Marie’s Professional Pastry School in San Francisco.

Hayes Valley Bakeworks operates the cafe as a non-profit “social enterprise.” In addition to our delicious food and coffee, we provide employment and training for people with disabilities, who are homeless or at risk. Hayes Valley Bakeworks is the brainchild of Toolworks, a dynamic non-profit organization connecting ability to opportunity. Toolworks partners with the bakery to create a supportive environment for our participants who learn all facets of the food service business.

4. Arizmendi Bakery

Forty years ago, Berkeley’s now-famous cooperative, the Cheeseboard, opened its doors. In 1997, inspired by their own success, they helped open another bakery based on cooperative principles. Arizmendi Oakland debuted that year on Lakeshore Avenue, named after the Basque labor organizer. The endeavor was a hit, so what next? They decided to open another bakery, this time in San Francisco.
