Today, there are 5 snehalaya homes located strategically in guwahati, namely: night shelter at paltan bazaar, children’s home at dhirenpara, auxilium snehalaya at noonmati, jyoti snehalaya at beltola and ila snehalaya at betkuchi. These form a “garland of love” around the city so that any child in distress can find a place for a short or long stay. A total of more than 200 children in these homes are looked after by a team of nearly 50 staff. The seed of the Ramakrishna Movement was sown in the soil of Guwahati immediately after the birth centenary of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna Deva (1936). A study circle was started initially and soon, a Samity with the title of “Ramakrishna Seva Samity” was constituted in 1939.The Samity was registered under the Society’s Registration Act 1860 in September 1940. Guwahati Municipal Corporation was pleased to give a plot of land at Chhatribari on lease and the Samity started its spiritual and philanthropic activities from that place. In appreciation of the humanitarian works done by the Samity, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math affiliated the Seva Samity as one of its Branch Centres in 1968.

We receive referrals of men and women from a number of different agencies including: homeless hostels nation-wide, local Community Groups, Police, NGOs working in the field of alcohol and substance abuse, and social workers from several organizations, as well as families and private individuals.We opened our first base in India, in the heart of the industrialized city of Gurgaon, in 1999. Since then we have expanded into 17 cities in 13 different states all over the country.
