Antaeus began in 1991 as a project of the prestigious Center Theatre Group. Founding Artistic Director Dakin Matthews and Co-Founder Lillian Groag felt strongly that Los Angeles actors could form an ensemble theatre company equal to any other in the world – and set out to do just that. Dakin brought together a remarkable group of 30 actors to embark on this ambitious project.

The Latino Theater Company (LTC) celebrates over 30 years of commitment to the creation of exciting, thought-provoking theater in Los Angeles. Artistic Director José Luis Valenzuela also co-founded the Latino Theater Lab at the LATC in 1985. Together with the Latino Theater Company, he has made significant contributions to the advancement of U.S. Latino Theater. In 2006, LTC was awarded a 20-year lease to operate the LATC, from the City of Los Angeles.

5 Echo theatre company

The Echo Theater Company has presented 60 Los Angeles Premiere Productions, 48 of them World Premieres and of those, 28 were commissioned. These productions introduced Los Angeles to Sarah Ruhl, David Lindsay-Abaire, Adam Rapp, Tanya Barfield, and Adam Bock, to name just a few. We just produced the Los Angeles premieres of Adam Bock’s A SMALL FIRE and Jessica Dickey’s ROW AFTER ROW. In February, we presented the World Premiere of Tommy Smith’s FUGUE. For our just completed first season at Atwater Village Theatre, we garnered five LADCC Awards, two Ovations and a Stage Raw for our World Premiere productions of Jessica Goldberg’s BETTER, Mickey Birnbaum’s BACKYARD and Tommy Smith’s FIREMEN. We also commissioned and presented six one acts by Shawna Casey, Miki Johnson, John Lavachielli, Jen Silverman, Brian Tanen, and Wes Walker.

10 Theatre west

Theatre West is part of a group of 44 Intimate non-profit theatres that meets weekly online to discuss the post COVID-19 re-emergence of theatre in Los Angeles. Like Los Angeles, our theatre community has always been at the forefront of innovation. As an integral part of the cultural conversation, a group of 44 artistic directors from LA’s intimate theatres came together two months ago to discuss how we can move through the current COVID crisis and come out stronger. We are committed to raising the bar and pushing the boundaries of professional theatre. 13 Geffen playhouse

Geffen Playhouse has been a hub of the Los Angeles theater scene since opening its doors in 1995. Noted for its intimacy and celebrated for its renowned mix of classic and contemporary plays as well as provocative world premiere productions, the not-for-profit organization continues to present a body of work that garners national recognition. Named in honor of entertainment mogul and philanthropist David Geffen, who made the initial donation to the theater, the company was founded by Gilbert Cates and is currently helmed by Executive Director Gil Cates, Jr., Artistic Director Matt Shakman and Board Chair Howard Tenenbaum.

14 The groundling theatre

The Groundlings Theatre at 7307 Melrose Avenue (previously an interior decorator’s studio, a furniture showroom, a gay bar, and then a ‘massage parlor’) was acquired by the company in 1975. Original Groundlings member Archie Hahn oversaw the ominous project. First step: Throw out all the soiled mattresses that littered the building. Through lots of sweat equity and with the use of personal funds, Groundlings members set out to modernize the building and turn it into a performance space. Hooray! New theatre, right?

15 Actor art theatre

One of the smallest theaters in Los Angeles at 32 seats, and located in a converted apartment in the Mid-Wilshire District, Actor’s Art Theatre is home to some of LA’s most talented stage and screen actors. AAT is dedicated to the belief that we are not separate from each other and have the capacity to empathize with all people; through the actor’s art, we can produce works that entertain and inspire change. Each year AAT presents readings, labs and produces an original play, classic revival or West Coast Premiere. Some projects move to larger theaters and TV or screen development.
