Why is privacy and security important on Social Media

When was the last time that you downloaded an app? Oh, it must be just a few minutes ago, right? But then were you terrified with the same set of ‘permission asking’ sessions that become an eager beaver and stand as a barrier on your road to ‘accessing’ the app? While on one hand, many of us tend to be the most submissive person on the earth and give in to all the permissions but then on the flip side of the coin, we do fail to realize that the user privacy is getting left on the back burner in this race of ‘technology’.

To add fuel to this privacy concern, web 2.0 comes knocking in. I’m sure many of you must be aware of the havoc that it can create. But for those who are on tenterhooks regarding this disastrous monster, let me fill in your pockets with some information. Web 2.0 has the audacity to cause social profiling. It can act as a filter and prepare a wonderful dish of your profile by mixing in your publicly and voluntarily shared data. Did this drop a bombshell? Yes, it’s true! They do generate your profiles by collecting your information from various social media platforms by making use of algorithms and technology.

Did you ever realize that the big companies, operating various social media platforms always batten down the hatches when even a minute security flaw approaches them. They have all the security boundaries to safe guard their data. But then, when it comes to safe guarding their users’ private information, their systems take a back seat. But the question is: How much do you value your privacy? Is it an asset to you?

Yes, just sit back and think, how much do you value your privacy? Do you even take a second to push the ‘accept’ button on your mobile phones while you are in a hurry of downloading that app which sets a bait by offering enticements to the users? Well, according to a research which was conducted, it was found people who are smacking distractedly in front of their computers, using social media day in and day out tend to be less cautious about their private information than those who rarely use the social media platform.

But hey! There’s nothing to worry about this! Do you know what both of these groups had in common? Do you know what serves as a perfect icing on this cake? So sit back and fasten up your seat belts as I am about to let the cat out of the bag! Well, both the above mentioned groups have come to a mutual agreement that the social media privacy is no more under their control as it used to be few years ago. It’s running like a wild forest fire now with an unanticipated end.

But what is the solution, then? Don’t say anything online that you would not want plastered on a billboard with your face on it. Got my point? As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth an ounce of cure. So, why not give a stern glare to all those ‘permissions’ out there, always trying to gain access of ‘our’ system? When we don’t let our friends scan through our precious mobile phones dotted with private information, then why let those malicious permissions take on our devices? These permissions that pop up every now and then may be good for the company but not necessarily do you any good.

So, why not take a minute and wade through any of the terms and conditions and other legalese before we finally make use of the social media platform? So, the next time you make use of any social media platform, don’t forget to check their user privacy policy and rejoice by keeping your trusted information in your known circle and hence keep the ringing alarm bells at bay!
