2.Noland Health Services

In 1913, Dr. Lloyd Noland came to Jefferson County, Alabama, at the invitation of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Land Company to address the public health needs of workers who suffered from smallpox, typhoid and other epidemic diseases. He had recently served during the construction of the Panama Canal, helping eradicate the malaria and yellow fever that plagued Americans working on the project. Soon after arriving in Birmingham, Dr. Noland realized there was a need in the community for more complete healthcare. He presented to the company his vision for a health system to address those needs. The result was a $750,000 healthcare facility, a private investment greater than the entire state budget for public health at the time.
