5.UIC Science and Engineering Labs East Building

Science and Engineering Labs East building is located at 950 South Halsted Street. The East and West part of SEL are linked by outdoor walkways on the 4th floor and a common roof. The ACCC computer labs and the Client Services Office are located in the east building, on the second floor.

To enter SELE from Taylor street, use the entrance to Engineering Research Facility (located at 842 West Taylor). Turn right and take the elevator to the second floor. Upon exiting the elevator, turn right and walk through the double door to enter SELE. The Client Services Office entrance is near the vending machines, on the left. Computer labs are located along the two main hallways.

There are also two entrances to SELE in between the east and west buildings, located on your right when heading north from Taylor

  1. Camras institute of Technology

Marvin Camras (1916-1995) was an electrical engineer and inventor who was widely influential in the field of magnetic recording. Camras built his first recording device, a wire recorder, in the 1930s for a cousin who was an aspiring singer. Shortly afterwards he discovered that using magnetic tape made the process of splicing and storing recordings easier.

Camras’s work attracted the notice of his professors at what is now the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT or Illinois Tech) and he was offered a position at the Armour Research Foundation (which in 1940 merged with Lewis Institute to become the Illinois Institute of Technology) to develop his work.
