3 Star Dance Studio
Ruth Jevarian, a professional ballet and Armenian folk dancer, opened Star Dance Studio in 1950. The studio was located briefly in the Haight Ashbury district before it was moved to the Inner Sunset. Ruth’s students loved her — she was talented, creative and taught all forms of dance, including ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics plus Armenian and other types of folk dancing. Her students performed around the city at special events, hospitals and senior centers, sharing the joy of dance with their audiences. She retired in 1974 and turned the studio over to her daughter, Micky Powell, the current school director. Micky has managed the studio for the past 40+ years, and the school has flourished under her direction. Her daughter, Julie, taught at the studio for many decades and remains involved in helping the school thrive.

4.MoBu Dance Studio
DancEsteem began in 1996 when founder and director Takami Craddock began teaching classes to children in San Francisco. She started with three pre-kindergarten students at Noe Valley Ministry after asking friends if anyone was interested in dance classes for their kids. The young dancers and families loved the classes, and found them to be refreshingly different from other programs. Over time they helped her grow her program by referring classes to their friends, and so on, and quite rapidly the program expanded through referrals and word of mouth. Today DancEsteem has more than 200 families in the program and a studio on Church Street.

Steppin’ Out Dance Studio began in 1995, evolving out of the historic Betty May Dance Studios which served the children of the Mission District since the 1930’s. Together Angela Rose and Avilee Goodwin continued the Betty May tradition while expanding her vision. New dance styles such as hip hop, creative movement, and contemporary have been added to the repertoire. Through our history, Steppin’ Out has striven to offer the young people of the neighborhood a place to learn dance technique, improve grace, poise, self-esteem, and gain performance experience in a nurturing atmosphere. 8.City Dance Studios HQ
City Dance was founded in 2003. We shifted to online only classes during the Covid lockdowns but opened up for in person instruction on Fridays and Sundays only this past June. We will host all of our classes again starting in September at a brand new facility that we will share again with City Ballet School. We specialize in urban dance forms such as Popping, House, Breaking, Locking, TopRock, Turfing and 90’s Hip Hop. We also have a fantastic selection of Hip Hop Choreo, Jazz, KPOP, Tap, Yoga and Contemporary dance classes. Our instructors are highly accomplished dancers and excellent/caring teachers. It’s very important to us that City Dance feels like a welcoming community to everyone who comes through our doors. 9.Arthur Murray Dance Studio
This pair didn’t start out as a pair. In fact, they couldn’t have started their Arthur Murray journeys any different. Daisey began taking lessons in the Arthur Murray Hayward studio, after an invitation by a friend, while attending college to study accounting. She was an avid salsa dancer and quickly fell in love with the environment and the escape that dancing provided. Chris, meanwhile, was coming to grips with a future without the sport he grew up playing. An injury, a misdiagnosis, and an eventual surgery led the way to a startling reality: no more basketball. Through the encouragement of a friend, he was introduced to swing dancing.

Emme recently became a San Francisco transplant after moving from New York City. Emme studied dance at The Ailey School, where she received Modern and Ballet training, and also performed in the Ailey Student Performance Group. After graduating, Emme studied at Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, and soon became a Teaching Assistant and Artist for the Taylor-in-the-Schools NYC Public School residency programs. In addition to teaching, Emme performed as a freelance dancer with The DynamitExperience, Bridget Cronin Dance, and Parisa Khobdeh Dance Company. During her free time, you can find Emme exploring the outdoors with her husband and petting as many dogs as possible.
