boarding schools in vermont

1.Vermont Academy

It is my honor to welcome you to a very special place in a gorgeous corner of New England. Vermont Academy is nestled on four hundred fifty acres at the foothills of the Green Mountains in Saxtons River, Vermont, just a half hour north of Brattleboro, an hour and a half from Hartford’s Bradley International Airport, and two and a quarter hours from Boston’s Logan Airport. We are strategically connected to a gorgeous natural space and yet fully accessible for domestic and international travel to campus.

As you might imagine, Vermont Academy has a long history of experiential learning and outdoor experiences, including hiking, skiing, and camping. As a nod to our history, we have a thirty-meter ski jump that is an iconic centerpiece to our campus, adjacent to our ski hill where many students enjoy a Sunday afternoon during the winter months. In the arts, we are also very much a Vermont school, with our state hosting numerous writers’ retreats and serving as home to authors and poets.

6.St. Johnsbury Academy

St. Johnsbury Academy was founded in 1842 by Erastus, Thaddeus, and Joseph Fairbanks to provide “intellectual, moral, and religious training for their own children and the children of the community.“ Unlike most New England boarding schools, St. Johnsbury Academy has educated both boys and girls since its founding.

The school was reincorporated in 1873 in order to accomplish the founders’ goal of providing exemplary educational opportunities to a wider range of students, not just those destined for liberal arts colleges and universities. The result of this reincorporation was a comprehensive school, offering technical training as well as college preparatory studies. With this change, the founders created a school that was unique among New England academies, greatly changing the character of the school, and enabling it to serve the educational needs of St. Johnsbury and the surrounding communities.
