Rice is the most important grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake, providing more than one-fifth of the calories consumed worldwide by humans. There are many varieties of rice and culinary preferences tend to vary regionally.
The New Year has dawned and we hope this bring new hopes and better stature to rice exports and exporters as well.
It is quite evident that despite the global impact on trade due to COVID-19 pandemic raging throughout the year 2020, India has seen a surge in rice exports .As is reflected by the data up to January, 2021 released by DGCIS, there has been a jump of 14% in Basmati rice exports and 134% in non-Basmati rice exports when compared with the corresponding period April-December of previous year. As against a total of 4.45 mn tonnes of Basmati exported last financial year, during the 10 months of this financial year, we have achieved 3.76 million tonnes already and there is a period of two more months still to go.
On the other hand non-basmati rice export, which dwindled to 5 mntonnes during 2019-20, has shown remarkable recovery and 9.46mntonnes have already been shipped out of the country till January, 2021. Gauging from this data, we are certainly heading for a record high in both segments of the rice sector.
But while we can never rest on the laurels, it is important to highlight that last few months have seen some drastic issues for the trade. These include severe shortage of containers and ever escalating freight charges. Appreciation of Rupee by 1.26% in December, 2020 was another setback which means the exporters would get less return for the same number of dollars.
