Heritage sites in South Africa

1.Maropeng: Official Visitor Centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site

The Cradle of Humankind is one of 10 World Heritage Sites in South Africa, and the only one in Gauteng. It is widely recognised as the place from which all of humankind originated.

The 47 000-hectare site has unearthed the best evidence of the complex journey that our species has taken to make us what we are – and is therefore a place of pilgrimage for all humankind. The area is not only a place of ongoing scientific discovery into our origins, but also a place of contemplation – a place that allows us to reflect on who we are, where we come from and where we are going to.The Gauteng Provincial Government is the designated management authority responsible for developing and protecting this extraordinary site for posterity.

2.Freedom Park Heritage Site & Museum

As we herald in this month, we do so in honour of former President Nelson Mandela and in recognition of his legacy. It is Mr Mandela’s exemplary leadership, great statesmanship and moral force that continue to inspire South Africans as they try to build a cohesive nation.

We must never forget that 27 years ago, South Africans were staring into a future marred by permanent civil strife which would have reduced our country to ashes and caused a great deal of suffering. It was the wisdom of leaders like Mr Mandela, underpinned by the values of Ubuntu, which enabled us to walk away from the precipice of a destructive war and to choose instead the path of reconciliation and peace. This month it offers ordinary South Africans a way of expressing commitment, drawing inspiration and courage from our rich history, and to continue to work through the current transition so that we can increasingly become the South Africa we envisage to be.

3.Castle of Good Hope

Good Day Castle Friends

It was about this time last year when the full might of the most devastating pandemic hit humanity.  The 356-year Castle was not spared and had to respond to the worst human and economic crisis in recent history.

Despite the debilitating operational impacts of the pandemic, the Castle Control Board (CCB) took a conscious decision not to lament but use the full might of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) to advance their heritage, tourism, and conservation mandates.  During these extraordinary times, the CCB organised virtual tours, virtual seminars, virtual exhibitions, blended events and even hosted a couple of international film shoots.

The CCB joined forces with artists, performers, community organisations, religious leaders and exhibitors to launch a series of thought-proving exhibitions:

“Posterity” with its focus on gender-based and other forms of societal violence and links with our colonial past;

“If These Bones Could Talk” about rhino poaching;

“Imam Haron” dealing with the life and times of this struggle cleric;

“Dulcie September” dealing with this anti-apartheid activist’s death by letter-bomb;

“Cape Muslim Heritage Art Exhibition”,

4.iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Since 1 August 2019, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park’s marine protected area (MPA) expanded significantly, with the result that the World Heritage Site is now 1,328,901ha in extent (marine and terrestrial combined). The Park is now South Africa’s second largest protected area after the Kruger National Park, incorporating the country’s largest MPA – also the only Transfrontier MPA as it joins Mozambique’s protected waters.

The Park contains three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, 700 year old fishing traditions, most of South Africa’s remaining swamp forests, Africa’s largest estuarine system, 530 bird species and 25,000 year-old coastal dunes – among the highest in the world. The name iSimangaliso means miracle and wonder, which aptly describes this unique place.

With its headquarters at Queen Elizabeth Park in Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital, Ezemvelo manages more than 120 protected areas and is the leader in sustainable biodiversity conservation. 9.Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct

Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. The site is a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens.

There is perhaps no other site of incarceration in South Africa that imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held within the walls of the Old Fort, the Women’s Jail and Number Four. Nelson Mandela. Mahatma Gandhi. Joe Slovo. Albertina Sisulu. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Fatima Meer. They all served time here. But the precinct also confined tens of thousands of ordinary people during its 100-year history: men and women of all races, creeds, ages and political agendas; the indigenous and the immigrant; the everyman and the elite. In this way, the history of every South African lives here
