·         Although there is less data on how effective PrEP is in people who inject drugs, we do know that when used as directed, PrEP reduces the risk of contracting HIV by at least 74%.

·         PrEP is much less effective when it is not taken as prescribed.

How long must I take PrEP before it becomes highly effective?

·         PrEP provides the best HIV protection for receptive anal sex (bottoming) after about 7 days of daily use.

·         PrEP reaches maximum protection for receptive vaginal sex and injection drug use after about 21 days of daily use.

·         Insertive anal sex (topping) and insertive vaginal sex have no data.

Is PrEP right for me?

PrEP may be right for you if you test negative for HIV, and any of the following apply to you:

You have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months and you

·         have a sexual partner with HIV (especially if the partner has an unknown or detectable viral load),

·         have not used a condom on a regular basis, or

·         have had an STD diagnosed within the last 6 months

if You inject drugs and you

·         have an injection partner with HIV, or

·         Share needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs (for example, cookers).
