Born in the small farming town of Sivagiri in Tamil Nadu, Sivakumar Palaniappan, or Siva for short, was immersed in the culture of being strong, simple, and hardworking all his life. His father never got a chance to go to school, and his mother had only gone to Class 5. Life was going to bed early to take care of the cows and walking miles just to reach school.

It all began when a teacher pushed him into participating in a tiny elocution competition. One encouragement set something huge in motion. Speaking introduced him to books, and books led to introspection, and gradually, the timid village boy discovered his voice.
