Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery Delhi is one of the prestigious projects of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India under the Ministry of Commerce to develop and promote the skill to manufacture international quality product. Formerly known as Jewellery Product Development Centre (JPDC) started in 1986, has done the pioneering work in training manpower in the specialized field of jewellery designing and manufacturing under the guidance and help of Indo-German Export Promotion (IGEP). This was restructured as Section 8 non-profit company and was rebranded as Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery Delhi (IIGJD), on the lines of other similar educational projects of GJEPC at various parts of the country in the year 2010. IIGJ Delhi is a subsidiary of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). This also took over the training projects in the field of identification and grading of diamonds and colored Gems from other projects of GJEPC like Indian Gemological Institute (IGI) and Gem Testing Lab (GTL).
