Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Tata Memorial Hospital is situated in Parel, Mumbai in India. It is a specialist cancer treatment and research center, closely associated with the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC). One of the fields of specialization of this hospital is in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L). The hospital claims to treat and cure 99% of the A.L.L patients. This hospital is also one of the few in India to have a P.E.T. scanner. <\/span><\/p>\n

The TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL was initially commissioned by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust on 28 February 1941 as a center with enduring value and a mission for concern for the Indian people.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1952 the Indian Cancer Research Centre was established as a pioneer research institute for basic research – later called the Cancer Research Institute (CRI). In 1957 the Ministry of Health took over the Tata Memorial Hospital. The transfer of the administrative control of the Tata Memorial Centre (Tata Memorial Hospital & Cancer Research Institute) to the Department of Atomic Energy in 1962 was the next major milestone. The Tata Memorial Hospital and Cancer Research Institute merged as the two arms of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in 1966 as a classic example of private philanthropy augmented by Government support with a mandate for Service, Education & Research in Cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story of Tata Memorial Hospital \u2013 <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Tata Memorial Centre constitutes the national comprehensive cancer center for the prevention, treatment, and research on Cancer and is comparable to any similar center in the world. This achievement has been possible due to the far-sighted and total support of the Department of Atomic Energy, responsible for managing this Institution since 1962.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1932 when Lady Meherbai Tata died of leukemia, after treatment abroad, Sir Dorab Tata was determined to establish similar facilities for the treatment of Cancer in India, initially planned for with Radium Institute in Bombay. Sir Dorab, unfortunately, died in 1932. Such was the commitment he made that the Trustees of the Sir Dorab Tata Trust, along with various outstanding Cancer specialists committed themselves in 1935 to the establishment of the center that would benefit the Nation with a more lasting value than the usual philanthropy. Out of this humanitarian concept and commitment from the House of Tata\u2019s was born the nucleus of a Hospital, in 1941, called the TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.<\/span><\/p>\n

    One of the fields of specialization of this hospital is in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L). Every year nearly 30,000 new patients visit the clinics from all over India and neighboring countries. Nearly 60% of these cancer patients receive primary care at the Hospital of which over 70% are treated almost free of any charges. Over 1000 patients attend the OPD daily for medical advice or for follow-up treatment. During the year 2003, over 20,000 new cases were registered in addition to over 13,000 Referral Cards issued for only special investigations. Nearly 8500 major operations are performed annually and 5000 patients treated with Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy annually in multi-disciplinary programs delivering established treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The TMH was the first Centre in the country to initiate Bone Marrow Transplant in 1983. PET-CT scanner has been procured to make this technology available for cancer management. In an effort to provide access to patients and their families who lack access or the means to visit the hospital, TMH has started an initiative to provide an online expert opinion through Navya.<\/span><\/p>\n
